EMPOWER YOUTH PROGRAM

More Than a Tutoring Program.
A Second Chance

Children in care are some of the most misunderstood young people in our communities. They’re labelled ‘too hard,’ excluded from school at rates far above their peers, and left to navigate a world that feels unsafe at every turn.

But they’re not too hard. They’re just waiting for the right person to show up – consistently, patiently, and without judgment.

That’s what the Empower Youth Program does.

APPLICATIONS

Applications for the following school year open in late September and close in mid-December each year.

As places are limited and planning for the upcoming year begins well in advance, applications are generally only accepted during this period. If you have exceptional circumstances and would like to discuss an application outside these dates, please contact our team.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible for the program, the following criteria must be met:

HOW IT WORKS

Each child is matched with a dedicated Learning Support Mentor who visits them at home, weekly, for a minimum of one full year. The program is built on the understanding that healing comes before learning – that a child cannot absorb knowledge until they feel safe.

Sessions are flexible, curriculum-aligned, and deeply personal. Mentors don’t just deliver lessons. They listen. They celebrate. They show up – week after week – until a child begins to believe that maybe, just maybe, they can do this.

Real outcomes. Independent evidence.

Change for Youth Foundation was founded in 2016 by Lisa Honeychurch – lawyer, advocate, and someone who had seen firsthand what happens when vulnerable children fall through the cracks.

It began with a pro bono Family Court case. Lisa represented a young boy in foster care and, through that experience, saw the instability, the emotional toll on carers, and the profound absence of consistent, relationship-based support for children navigating trauma. She couldn’t walk away from that.

Change for Youth taught her how to believe in herself…

Thanks to the Empower Youth program, Miss 10 has grown in confidence and self-belief.

The one-on-one Learning and Well-being Support is so beneficial, as the work and how it is presented can be tailored to suit each individual child, unlike in the classroom, where everyone has to learn in the same way at the same time.

The skills and knowledge Miss 10 has learnt and continues to learn during her Support sessions will spread across all other aspects of her life moving forward and will teach her not to give up, to know that she has the skills to do it if she sets her mind to it, and most importantly, to believe in herself.

He called himself the worst kid in Australia…

J is a child with multiple diagnoses and trauma. He loved school but, unfortunately, was expelled in grade 3. He felt rejected by the world and fell into a dark place. It was not possible for him to attend school. He was placed on a medical exemption for 12 months. No schoolwork was provided.

Thankfully Change for Youth Foundation accepted him into their program. He was delighted to receive their welcome pack.

His Learning and Wellbeing Support Mentor had a hard job. He called himself the worst kid in Australia. There was work avoidance, meltdowns, etc. Picking up a pencil often triggered him. They had to gain trust and be creative in their approaches to engage him. This meant using play and focusing learning around his interests.

J’s reading significantly improved. He would ask for books that I thought were too advanced, but he could read them. They introduced him to new topics which he found fascinating. He found the confidence to attempt work. This was huge. Previously if he didn’t know an answer, he would punch himself in the face.

His Empower Youth Support Mentor showed him he is capable. Their positive energy and belief in him helped change his opinion of himself and prepared him to return to school. He is now in grade 6 through distance education with passing grades. His Empower Youth Support Mentor is there every week to encourage and assist him with schoolwork. His teachers have noticed improvements too.

Her love for science shone through…

S is behind other children in her class. She has a global developmental delay, and repetition is the answer for her.

S loves to learn by doing tasks. She has learned some patience. Her love for science has shone through. Her maths, English, and reading skills are much better. I attribute these skills to Little Stars.

S loves her Support Mentor. S has more confidence to try a task set for her because her Learning Support Mentor has helped her develop skills even S didn’t know she had. She now puts her hand up in class. The school has made comments about her willingness to participate in class now.
